Fecal Smearing

Hello, this is Bernadine Janzen with TATTAC. Recently there was discussion on a national ATTACh clinicians forum about fecal smearing. I thought it would be helpful to both parents and professionals to hear some of that discussion because many parents express to me that fecal smearing is an enormous problem for them. It can be a problem in the home, in school and in the community and therefore, merits respect of the parents concern.

Before assuming it is a psychological problem, medical reasons should be ruled out. Medical reasons could include a number of possible things: diarrhea, poor sphincter control, GI illnesses that cause constipation, etc. So, if you will agree that fecal smearing by children, who experience attachment issues, is a behavioral symptom of something else, we can have a foundation to begin with.
